1980's Electro-Harmonix Small Stone EH4800

First made in 1974, the Electro-Harmonix Small Stone is a Phase Shifter that’s built quite a reputation for itself, and for a good reason. This particular pedal is the EH4800 or V3, made in the 80's, baby! The controls on this pedal have remained the same throughout it’s different iterations, because well, if it’s not broken don’t fix it! These include a speed control knob and a colour switch, which adds feedback, pumping up the phasing effect.

David Cockerell, who designed the Small Stone, based it on the EMS Synthi Hi-Fli from 1971 which uses Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTA) rather than operational amplifiers with variable resistors. This creates a unique flavour to the phaser and strong third harmonic distortion. The Small Stone is capable of a wide range of effects, from subtle smooth phasing to viscous, deep sounds.

This pedal has been used by Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), Thomas DeLonge (Blink 182) and Paul McCartney (The Beatles). The Small Stone is great for any type of rock or pop, indie, electronic and metal.
